(THIS CONTEST WAS FOR FATHER”S DAY 2009)

MUG Root Beer knows 40 percent of dads have received a Father’s Day gift that wasn’t on their wish list.  This year, MUG Root Beer is reinventing the Father’s Day tradition with Dad’s favorite past time-a frosty brew and ingredients for spending time with family and friends outdoors. I have received five MUG Root Beer “Brew-B-Q” Gift Packs.  The gift pack contains a cooler, 2 liters of MUG Root Beer and all the ingredients to make their special Southern Brew-B-Q Sauce recipe

Does your dad deserve to win a “Brew-B-Q” Gift pack?  Or maybe your husband?  If you’d like to nominate someone, send an email to to bbqgrail@earthlink.net (or you can use the comment box below) and tell me why “dad” deserves to win.  Remember, this is a Father’s Day contest so it has to be about dad, the kids and BBQ.  You can include a picture if you’d like.  (If you send me a picture, you are giving me permission to publish!)  All entries will be posted on the BBQ Grail blog.  Winner’s will be decided by me and announced here on Father’s Day.  You’ll receive an email if you win, requesting your address.

I’d like to nominate, Chris Duncan, as “Father Figure of the Year”, he may not be a biological father but I’ve never believed that’s what it takes to be a good Dad. He’s stepped in and loved 3 children just like his own. Over 10 years ago he joined the lives of these 3 special children and never looked back. He willingly gave 110% of his love, energy, support and commitment to John, Ashley and Seth. Since we weren’t married yet, we were living in a small 1 bedroom apartment so that meant changing our bar into a changing area for the kids, our kitchen table had to accompany booster chairs and a high chair and our queen bed was given to John and Ash. Seth had a port a crib in the front living room and Chris moved to the couch or recliner to sleep.

I can’t begin to describe the impact he has had on these 3 children. He shares a unique and special relationship with each one of them.

John, the oldest, has always had a sweet relationship with Unc. We like to credit Chris for his language, which is a huge triumph considering he has autism. Chris was the only one in our family who always talked to John as if he was a little man. He would have full conversations with John and engage him in interesting things such as where we were driving etc. He encouraged John to talk and respond to all of his questions and never treated John differently, even though he had a disability. Chris always expected John to try new things and often pushed him (in a loving way) to branch out whether it was a new activity or even trying a new food. As John has become older he turns to Unc for humor, support and love. John likes to hang out with his Unc because in his words “He funny, tells a lot of jokes and is a good teaser.”

Ash, who Chris likes to call “Al-B”, absolutely adores him. She has created her own nickname for him “U-B”. They text each other all the time and she checks in while he’s at work. She’s constantly telling him she loves him and she hopes he doesn’t work too hard. Since Ash was a baby, she would reach up from Chris’ legs and motion for him to pick her up, he always would and then you’d find him rocking her to sleep on his chest. They’ve always had that special bond. When she was about 4 years old she got into my nailpolish (while I was in the bathroom) and completely polished her Unc’s favorite recliner (and herself). When I called him at work and explained that he was going to come home to a chair full of dark burgundy nailpolish he said “Well it’s ok, my curly haired cutie did it!” and he laughed. Like I said he holds a soft place in his heart for her and today you can still find her curled up in his lap even though she’s about 5’4″ now and 14 years old.

Seth was one month old when we first got him, so Chris has been a father to him since he was born. Since Seth had breathing problems when he was an infant Chris and I would take shifts every few hours watching over him as he would sleep as to make sure he was still breathing. Chris would often let me sleep while he stayed awake and took care of dirty diapers, bottle feedings and general monitoring to ensure he was breathing. He never complained and got up and took the kids to daycare and headed off to work each and every day. Seth and Chris have a tight bond and share so much together. He taught Seth how walk, talk, swim, skateboard, snowboard, ride a bike and so much more. If Unc’s doing something Seth wants to be right there doing it with him. We call Seth, Chris’ mini me! They are inseparable and watching the two of them together is a good reminder of what a special thing the father/son bond is.

This email cannot begin to show the countless hours and days that Chris has given to these children, it’s really just a small glimpse into some the special highlights. I could never thank him for all he’s done for John, Ash and Seth, he’s a hero. In my opinion, 3 children’s lives took a turn in the wrong direction but they were rescued because they had an Uncle who became a Dad just when they needed him. He stepped in when others couldn’t and loved them unconditionally…like any good father would.

I love him for all he’s given to them and to my entire family, they wouldn’t be who they are today if it wasn’t for Chris and his unselfish choice to help.

I wanted to nominate my dad! He is phenomenal! He works so hard for his family. Not only has he served as a police officer, he is a cancer survivor who still works more than full time to provide for his family, and help my husband & I provide for our children, one of which is disabled. My dad has always stuck by my side, and he always lets my momma know how much he loves her. He ROCKS at makin’ bar-b-q, whether its a few racks O ribs, or 26 oz. Ribeyes, or when he slow cooked 8 briskets all on his own for a wedding, hes got it goin on! I have never seen a man who watches more bar b q shows on food network! I think his dream would be to go up against Bobby Flay! I know he would be thrilled to have a Frosty Root Beer!

  • Shelleye Phillips

  • Shelleye Phillips

Not only has my man raised his two wonderful sons but has taken on the task of me and my four kids! John always puts family first, so often missing out on things he wants to fulfill the wishes of one of his 6 kids. What can beat a man like that I ask?

  • I am going to nominate myself. My name is Gary, I have a 5 year old son named Ganon. Ganon likes root beer, and Ganon would really like to share a root beer float with his dad (and even his mom) For fathers day I would like for my name to be picked as a winner, so I can then tell Ganon he won the contest and that he wins Root Beer, and that would make him really happy, making it the best fathers day present ever. Plus I make killer BBQ and am saving an 11 pound Strube Ranch brisket for a select few people.

  • What can I say except that I think my hubby is the best. He treats me with respect and loves me unconditionally. He is a hard worker and good provider and he does the dishes!! What more can a girl ask for?

  • Greg Laramore

I will nominate myself. I love my kids and grandkids, I love BBQ, and I really love MUG Root Beer!!!!

My dad is gone now, but I nominate his grandson who loves to grill and BBQ. His favorite BBQ sauce has Coca Cola in it but I think he is going to be very excited to try this Mug BBQ recipe because he loves their root beer.

I would like to nominate myself. I’m dad to my two boys (Zach 12 and Gabe 6)who love to help out when its time to BBQ! I have a full time job and work part-time making up for the lack of a second income during the summertime. My wife works at a private grade school and summers are tough on pocketbook. Whenever I get free time its usually spent with the boys BBQ-ing. Gabe loves to spritz the meat! I’ll email the pic of him doing such.

  • I want to nominate my Dad! He is the greatest Dad in the whole world. He works hard all day and then comes home and gets right to work around the house, mowing the lawn, cleaning the gutters, helping with dishes, taking down the garbage, grocery shopping, and anything else that needs to be done. He is always there for me, no matter! He deserves the gift pack so he can sit back and relax for once with a nice mug of frosty root beer and some delicious BBQ food!

I have fond memories of sharing root beer floats on a hot summer day in Houston, Texas with my Dad and younger brothers; boy they sure tasted good. Gotta drop the hint to my son for this upcoming Father’s Day.
I am also curious about the Southern Brew BQ sauce; is it available in the Northeast.

  • jacob
